While two of the stories come from India, there are other fables taken from China, Ukraine and Greece. I always have it with me and it is always a hit.
It was so much fun to re-read these Tales – with all the rhyming words and the conversations between animals. My friends, as you may see I did not read much poetry But one fine evening at the Victoria Not the falls, but the Memoria’ When I walked in through the gate And saw Shri Vikram Seth Who sat and talked about his prose As well as verse, in generous dose Then as he recited from Beastly Tales I dropped all thoughts of beers and ales How I wished my hands were paws And nails on them were rather claws While I looked for this one book By hook or crook, in hole and nook At last I found it on a site Which sells all things, be day or night Tales from China, Greece and Gup Ukraine and India, held close up I read all ten with childlike wonder At times on the bed, at times under All of them left me mesmerised I bet you too will be surprised To see yourself grinning like a kid And forget being some Nancy or Sid So read this one at your leisure For if not this, then what is treasure?

Revisiting folk tales in rhymed verse is a splendid thing to do! No eBook available Amazon. Seth communicates to us using animals as a medium. It is really very good IMO, and neatly encapsulates not just its protagonists’ journey, but post India’s too in a way Dec 08, Sukanto rated it it was amazing.
If the latter, I highly recommend A Suitable Boy.

The Eagle and the Beetle. If The Crocodile And The Monkey talks about the ugliness of greed, The Frog And The Nightingale a personal favourite from the book is a particularly moving story about a nightingale, who tale her voice and her audience, by heeding to the selfish frog’s advice.

All revolve around animals, with humans only in the background a bit, such as the king who unwittingly provides a home and meals for bed louses, until a mosquito joins them, or the humans in the last story who want to dam a river and upset the beasts’ homes I bought it the last time i was in india.
By the author of A Suitable Boy. This is a beautiful collection of fables, they are stories which are versified. Snippet view – Personally, I didn’t like the film much and suspect the book is far superior.

Some of its stories are very much in the vein of George Orwell’s Animal Farmwhich we know was a hard-hitting political allegory. He lives in England and India. My friends, as you may see I did not read much poetry But one fine evening at the Victoria Not the falls, but the Memo Alright, I know what I’m gonna do here will probably in no way justify the brilliance of “Beastly Tales”, but I’m gonna try nevertheless coz I’m one arrogant show-off to review this book in verse, using a rhyme scheme similar to the one used by Seth in this book.

Want to Read saving…. So, if you are looking for a light hearted read, pick this one. All the stories are simple-minded, and rhythmic.
Beastly Tales from Here and There by Vikram Seth
They all have a moral to them and some of them are recognisable like The Hare and the Tortoise. The book contains ten tales in verse, written by Seth on a day that was too hot for him to concentrate on his work. From Here and There Limited preview – However, the effect and impact wanes a little through the 10 tales and since the last is the longest it felt a little bit of a chore to finish. This book is about various stories from around the world about animals but written in verse.

So short that it can easily be read in one quick session and so enjoyable Adapting tales from China, Greece, the Ukraine and his homeland of India, and presenting them in rhyming verse, Vikram Seth has created a small masterpiece of fables for our time.
